Stud spacing
Stud spacing is the distance from the centre of one stud to the next, typically 600 mm or 450 mm in Europe and 16 or 24 inches in North America.
Also known as stud centres, on centre spacing, o.c. spacing, c/c spacing, 600 mm centres, 16 inch on center
The spacing is chosen so board widths land on studs: a 1200 mm board covers two 600 mm bays, a 4-foot sheet three 16-inch bays. It also sets how much load each stud carries and how wide the insulation cavities are.
Wider spacing uses less timber and leaves more room for insulation, which improves thermal performance; closer spacing gives stiffer walls and more fixing points.
