Stud

A stud is one of the vertical members that make up the frame of a wall panel.

Also known as studs, wall stud, vertical stud

Studs are the upright timbers (or light gauge steel sections) spaced at regular centres in a wall frame. Together with the horizontal top and bottom plates, and short cross-pieces called noggins, they form the skeleton that sheathing, insulation and cladding are fixed to.

Stud spacing, length and any openings are set by the design of each panel, so a factory wall line has to handle frequent changes from one element to the next without stopping to reset.
