Sound insulation
Sound insulation is a building element’s ability to reduce the transfer of noise from one space to another, through the air or through the structure.
Also known as acoustic insulation, soundproofing, airborne sound insulation, impact sound, acoustic wall
Airborne sound, such as voices or music, is reduced by mass, airtightness and separated layers; impact sound, such as footsteps on a floor, by resilient layers and decoupled structures. Requirements are highest between apartments.
Lightweight timber walls achieve good sound insulation by combining heavy boards, absorbent insulation in the cavity and double or staggered stud frames that break the path for vibrations.
