Precast concrete

Precast concrete is concrete cast into elements such as walls, slabs, beams and stairs in a factory, then transported and assembled on site.

Also known as precast, precast concrete elements, prefabricated concrete, precast panels, hollow-core slab

Casting in a factory, in reusable moulds and controlled conditions, gives better surface quality and faster curing than casting in place. Elements such as hollow-core floor slabs, sandwich wall panels and columns are lifted into position and connected on site.

Precast is the heavyweight branch of prefabrication. Elements are heavy, so crane capacity and transport weight limit their size, and many buildings combine a precast or cast-in-place concrete frame with lighter, prefabricated timber infill walls.
