Infill wall
An infill wall is a non-load-bearing external wall fitted between the floor slabs or frame of a building, closing it in without carrying its structure.
Also known as infill panel, non-load-bearing external wall, curtain wall element, infill walling
In buildings with a concrete, steel or timber main frame, the structure carries the loads and the facade only has to keep out the weather, insulate and carry the windows. Infill walls do exactly that: they sit between the slabs, floor by floor, and are fixed back to the frame.
Timber-framed infill walls are widely used in multi-storey housing because they are light, well insulated and easy to prefabricate complete with windows and cladding. Installed from the outside, they close in each storey quickly.
