Modern methods of construction (MMC)
Modern methods of construction (MMC) is the UK umbrella term for building methods that move work from the site into a factory or use new processes on site.
Also known as MMC, modern methods of construction, MMC categories, MMC definition framework, MMC category 1, MMC category 2
The UK government’s MMC definition framework divides MMC into seven categories. Category 1 is volumetric (3D) modules, category 2 is panelized (2D) systems such as timber-frame wall panels and cassettes, and the remaining categories cover components, additive manufacturing, non-structural assemblies, product innovation and site process improvements.
The term is used in policy, funding and procurement, where housing providers are often asked to report the share of homes built with MMC. In practice it overlaps closely with offsite construction and prefabrication.
