Mass customisation

Mass customisation is producing individually designed products with the efficiency of series production.

Also known as mass customization, batch size one, one-off production, customised prefab, configurable houses

Houses are rarely identical: plans, openings, heights and finishes change from project to project. Mass customisation accepts that variety and organises production so that each element can be different without slowing the line.

It depends on two things: a standardised system of components and details that designs draw on, and data-driven machines that set themselves up from the design of each piece rather than from manual adjustment.
