CAD/CAM
CAD/CAM links computer-aided design with computer-aided manufacturing, so machines are driven directly by the design data rather than by manual measurement.
Also known as CAD CAM, computer-aided design and manufacturing, CAM, CNC, machine data
CAD is where the element is drawn; CAM turns that drawing into machine instructions: which piece to cut, where to nail, where to mill an opening. When the two are connected, a change in the design reaches the machine without anyone re-entering dimensions.
In prefab production CAD/CAM is what makes variety affordable. Each wall or floor element can be different, because every station receives the exact data for the piece in front of it.
