Roof trusses

Stub truss

A stub truss is a truss with one end cut short and closed by a vertical member, so it stops before its full shape would.

Also known as stub truss, stub end truss, truncated truss, bobtail truss, stubbed truss

Instead of running down to a normal heel, one end of the truss ends in a vertical stub. That lets the truss bear on a wall set in from the eaves, meet a higher wall or beam, or fit a building where the full triangle would not.

Stub ends are common at steps in the building outline and where a new roof meets an existing wall. In the UK such trusses are also called bobtail trusses.
