Prefabricated house

A prefabricated house is a house whose main parts (walls, floors, roof) are manufactured in a factory and assembled on site.

Also known as prefab house, prefab home, factory-built house, kit house, package house, manufactured home

Prefabricated houses range from flat-pack kits of pre-cut timber, through panelized houses built from factory-made wall, floor and roof elements, to fully volumetric homes delivered almost complete. What they share is that most of the building work happens indoors, under controlled conditions.

The model is long established in Scandinavia, where a large share of detached houses have been factory-built for decades. The benefits are shorter build times on site, less weather exposure, consistent quality and more predictable cost.
