Lean production
Lean production is a way of organising manufacturing around a continuous flow of value to the customer, removing every step that does not add to it.
Also known as lean manufacturing, lean construction, lean, Toyota production system, waste elimination
Lean comes from the Toyota Production System. It identifies waste in forms such as waiting, unnecessary transport and handling, overproduction, excess stock, rework and unused skills, and it works steadily to remove them, with flow, standardised work and continuous improvement.
Prefab factories lend themselves to lean thinking because the process repeats: elements move through the same stations every day, so waiting times, handling and stoppages can be measured and reduced.
