Ergonomics in production
Ergonomics in production is designing work so people can do it without strain or injury: lifts, reaches, postures and repetition within safe limits.
Also known as workplace ergonomics, manual handling, work environment, heavy lifting, occupational health
Building elements are large and heavy, and much of the work is repetitive: lifting boards, placing studs, nailing and turning panels. Over time that leads to back, shoulder and wrist injuries, one of the main occupational health risks in construction.
Factory production makes improvement possible: work at table height instead of on the ground, lifting aids for boards and panels, and automation for the heaviest and most repetitive tasks. Good ergonomics also makes the jobs easier to recruit for.
