Roof trusses

Overhang (eaves)

The overhang is the part of the top chord that extends beyond the outside of the wall, forming the eaves of the roof.

Also known as overhang, eaves overhang, roof overhang, truss tail, eaves

The overhang carries the roof out past the wall so rainwater falls clear of the facade, and it supports the fascia, soffit and gutters. Its length is set by the design of the building and is part of each truss drawing.

The overhang is usually a continuation of the top chord. Long or complex eaves can be formed with separate pieces fixed to the truss after pressing.
