Storey-and-a-half house
A storey-and-a-half house has a full ground floor and a second floor built into the roof, with sloping ceilings and knee walls.
Also known as 1.5 storey house, one and a half storey house, story and a half, chalet bungalow, room-in-roof house
The upper floor uses the roof space, so the house needs a steep roof and a roof structure that leaves the space open: frame (A-) trusses, attic trusses or a rafter roof. Dormers or roof windows bring in light and headroom.
The type is very common in Sweden (1½-planshus) and appears as the chalet bungalow in the UK and the story-and-a-half house in North America.
