Building elements

Closed panel

A closed panel is a prefabricated wall or roof element that leaves the factory boarded on both faces, with insulation and often windows, services and cladding fitted.

Also known as closed panels, closed wall panel, closed panel system, insulated wall panel, closed timber frame panel

Where an open panel is just a braced frame, a closed panel is close to a finished piece of building envelope. The frame is sheathed on the outside, insulated, fitted with a vapour barrier and boarded on the inside, and windows, doors, service runs and even cladding can be installed before delivery.

Closing panels moves the most weather-sensitive and labour-intensive work into the factory. The building is weathertight within days of erection, but the panel needs more factory capacity, careful design coordination and a tighter link between design data and production.
