Batten
A batten is a thin strip of timber fixed across a roof or wall to carry tiles, cladding or a ventilation gap.
Also known as battens, roofing batten, tile batten
A batten is a narrow length of sawn timber. On a roof, tile battens are fixed at set gauges across the rafters or trusses to hang roof tiles from; counter-battens run the other way to form a drained and ventilated cavity. On a wall, battens create the gap behind rainscreen cladding.
Battens are simple, but they are needed in large quantities and in precise lengths, so the saving is in cutting them quickly and accurately to a cutting list rather than by hand.
